Research shows three-quarters of fire doors failed inspection during 2019
Data released by the FDIS (The Fire Door Inspection Scheme) has revealed a staggering 76% of fire doors inspected last year were condemned due to not being fit for purpose.
The FDIS, a joint venture between the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers (GAI), examined over 100,000 inspections in over 2,700 buildings to compile the report.
Common problems with installation included excessive gaps and use of non-compatible foam, while the top three condemned reasons were gaps, issues around smoke sealing, and poorly adjusted doors. Alarmingly, 16% percent of the doors inspected were not fire doors.
The quality of installation work and of servicing also came under scrutiny, with the data revealing that only 24% of the building inspected that held third party certification had fire doors that were installed and maintained correctly. Instead, 40% were installed correctly but maintained poorly and the final 36% were both installed poorly and maintained poorly.
The FDIS cited people’s lack of knowledge on fire doors as one of its biggest concerns after viewing the data.
